The deadline for linking PAN and Aadhaar was 30th June 2023. If you failed to link your PAN and Aadhaar by this deadline, your PAN would have become inoperative. An inoperative PAN means you cannot file ITR or claim returns. Moreover, you cannot open a Demat account, book time deposits with banks and NBFCs, or purchase mutual funds with an inoperative PAN. Even for high-value purchases made through online marketplaces or offline stores, you need to present active PAN details if the transaction amounts to Rs. 2 Lakhs or more.

You can tackle this issue by linking your PAN and Aadhaar at the earliest. Once you link these two documents, you can check the linkage status online/offline. This article covers 5 alternative ways of checking your PAN-Aadhaar link status.

Five effective ways to review your PAN-Aadhaar link status

If you have successfully submitted your PAN-Aadhaar linking request, you can check the status of the same using one of the five following methods:

Option 1: Review PAN-Aadhaar link status without having to log into the e-filing Portal

Follow the below-mentioned steps to check your PAN-Aadhaar linking status without logging into the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal:

Step 1: Visit the e-filing portal.

Step 2: Scroll to Quick Links option and click on Link Aadhaar Status.

Step 3: Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number in the displayed fields.

Step 4: Review your PAN-Aadhaar linking status. If your PAN is linked with your Aadhaar you will receive a confirmation message. Alternatively, if it is in progress, you will receive a message stating your request is with the UIDAI awaiting validation.

Option 2: Review PAN-Aadhaar link status after logging into the e-filing Portal

If you have already registered on the Income Tax portal, you can review PAN-Aadhaar link status by logging into the portal using the following steps:

Step 1: Log into the IT Department’s e-filing portal using your credentials.

Step 2: Either click on the Link Aadhaar Status option that’s listed on the dashboard or head to ‘My Profile’ to access the Link Aadhaar Status option.

Step 3: Review your current PAN-Aadhaar link status instantly.

Option 3: Review PAN-Aadhaar link status using the direct link

To make things easier, the IT department also lets you check the linking status via a direct link online. Here’s a step-by-step guide to using the direct link:

Step 1: Go to this direct link: https://eportal.incometax.gov.in/iec/foservices/#/pre-login/link-aadhaar-status

Step 2: Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number on this page.

Step 3: Click on ‘View Link Aadhaar Status’ to review the status of your request.

Option 4: Review PAN-Aadhaar link status through the National Government Services portal

Apart from the methods mentioned above, you can also check your PAN-Aadhaar linkage status through the National Government Services portal. Follow these steps to go about the process smoothly:

Step 1: Visit the National Government Services portal.

Step 2: Under Services, click on ‘Ministry of Finance’.

Step 3: Use the toggle tool on the upper right side of the screen to filter the service search to ‘Popular’.

Step 4: Select ‘Check Aadhaar PAN Card link status’ from the popular services listed.

Step 5: You will be redirected to the Income Tax Department’s website.

Step 6: Enter your PAN and Aadhaar Number and click on ‘View Link Aadhaar Status’.

Option 5: Review PAN-Aadhaar link status using SMS

If you don’t have access to the internet, you can still check the linkage status offline by using the SMS service. To do so, simply follow these steps:

Step 1: Use your registered mobile number to draft an SMS in the given format: UDIPAN followed by your unique 12-digit Aadhaar number and 10-digit PAN.

Step 2: Send this SMS to either 567678 or 56161.

Step 3: Wait to receive a reply from this service.

Step 4: Check the reply message. If the linking is successful, the message will say ‘Aadhaar is already associated with PAN (your 10-digit PAN)’. In case your PAN and Aadhaar are not yet linked, the message will say ‘Aadhaar is not associated with PAN (your 10-digit PAN)’

    Conclusion

All PAN Card holders in India have to link their PAN to their Aadhaar numbers to ensure compliance. If you’ve missed the 30th June 2023 deadline, you can complete the linkage today on the IT Department’s e-filing portal. Once you finish submitting the linkage request, you can check its progress in one of the five easy ways highlighted above.
